Hair Care - Preventing Hair Breakage .

By Mudiame

I grew up knowing that the harmattan weather is associated amongst many other things with hair breakage – can I get witness ladies… I did not understand the reason, so I could not protect my hair (...who doesn't like long hair?).

Today as I assisted a young lady to loosen the weavon off her hair, I realized her hair was breaking and I informed her. She asked me a question which immediately made me want to share the little hair knowledge I have gained over the years.

Our hair needs moisture. During hot weather, moisture is readily available as most people sweat a lot, and nobody needs to tell you to wash your hair. In the harmattan season, the reverse is true; and because of the dry atmosphere, this affects the hair which easily becomes dry and bristle.

You can therefore prevent hair breakage by moisturizing your hair. By this, I mean using hair products with high water content, another option which I am a big fan of is - the mixture of water and glycerin. Did I see a strange look on your face… you heard me right water and glycerin! Asides from moisturizing your hair, the glycerin would strengthen your hair strands, and give you hair a subtle glow, thus preventing hair dryness.

What I do is this; I pour some glycerin into a spray bottle, and add water. I then shake to ensure it is well mixed. I spray on my hair as the need arises.

No matter what hair style you have on, and if you have on your natural hair, ensure you spray. For weavons, open up the attachments, so you can see your scalp, then spray at a distance – so it falls on your hair as drops. I am currently on braids and I spray by opening up my braids, portion by portion and spraying at a distance.

***** As spray bottle, you can make use of the empty perfume bottles that can be opened and closed; so you easily could pour in your desired content to be sprayed.

Please share with us other ways of preventing hair breakage during harmattan.
